In the heart of the captivating rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His life was essentially unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the solo tree on the peak were his main associates. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a check here joke on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick persisted for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
